How to Choose the Right Company

Hiring a service provider for our homes can be intimidating. Not only are there many options, but it’s hard to see who the best one is for your needs. In a perfect world we want things performed quickly, perfectly and for very little money. Unfortunately, we live in a world where service providers use this against us when giving us quotes. We’re going to show you the best way to vet any service providers you run into for your needs.

Good Service Providers Should Welcome Your Vetting Process

The first question you want to ask your service provider is, “Do you have insurance?” Because if the answer is no, you don’t want them anywhere on your property in such a way that they can hurt themselves. You will be opening yourself up to a lawsuit against you if they hurt themselves. And if they have insurance, do they have liability? If they don’t have any general liability, any sort of damage that occurs to your home will not be covered. Find out how much liability they have as well. The standard amount for service providers is 1 million dollars. If they can’t get past the insurance question, turn them away immediately!

Don’t Play it Safe and Get Caught with a Lawsuit

Next question to ask them is, “Do you offer a warranty on your work?” A warranty is different than a guarantee. When someone guarantees something, they are promising the achieved result. But a warranty is a promise to keep the achieved result in that current state for a length of time. It’s easy to get swept up in guarantees by a service provider, especially when the price is right. A warranty is a promise by the company to stand by their service long after they’ve left. If the service provider can’t stand by their work with a warranty, you may be going into your wallet again and much sooner than you think.

Another question that you may have not considered is, “How important is continued education in operating your business?” This is one question they won’t expect, but it’s the most important. Many professionals need to get continued education units, or CEUs, to retain their certification. This includes pilots, teachers, doctors, dentists, welders, and service providers are no different. The industry changes often, and it’s critical to stay on the cutting edge of information, technology and compliance. If your service provider is not bettering themselves by furthering their education, they’re not furthering the results for your home.

The Right Choice Will Invest in Themselves

Finally, the last question you can ask is, “Do you have proof of a local, national and global background check conducted on employees that may enter our home?” And the key part of that question is the last part: “Employees that may enter our home.” Websites that offer service providers like Home Advisor do not require that every employee in the company be background checked. They only require the owners of the company be checked. Often it is not the owner that enters the home, it’s an employee. What benefit does that background check have on you then? Make sure the service provider can promise you that every employee is background checked and doesn’t have any predatory convictions.

These are just some of the questions you can ask your service provider when they come to provide a quote. Hold them to the highest standard. They are coming into our homes, coming into proximity with our families, and are being given temporary access to our lives and well-being.
